Seachtain na Gaeilge 2021

Seachtain na Gaeilge is an international Irish language festival with Energia and is the biggest celebration of our native language and culture that takes place in Ireland and many other countries every year. As we celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge this year under very different circumstances, we remember and celebrate all that makes us Irish – our culture, our history, our music, our dance, a sense of belonging and our sense of spirit.

Seachtain na Gaeilge gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy the Irish language by participating in the festival, both native speakers, learners and those with a few words, by providing a calendar of entertaining and fun events for all interests and age groups. Events in Seachtain na Gaeilge are organized by voluntary and community groups, local councils, schools, libraries, and music, sports, arts and cultural organizations in their area.

The Irish language belongs to everyone, to every community Seachtain na Gaeilge with Energia – Try It Out – Surprise Yourself!

It’s World Book Day!

Today is World Book Day and this year’s theme is ‘share a story’.

World Book Day is one of the highlights of the National Literacy Trust and exposes children to the celebration of authors, illustrators, books and the joy of reading.

Reading for pleasure is at the heart of World Book Day. We know that making every day a book day can have significant impacts on children and young people’s wellbeing and it is important to encourage children to read for pleasure during these very turbulent times.

While this year may be slightly different due to lockdown, please encourage children to share a story with the people they live with or by getting grandparents or other family members to read stories to them over video chat. Here are some other ideas for families to consider; set aside a family reading time when everyone at home all read their own books or magazines; build a cosy reading den with cushions in a corner, or a sheet draped over chairs to make a tent; read a story or chapter and then act it out together.

We hope you enjoy World Book Day 2021!

Water Safety

We’ve been living in very different times recently and school has looked a little different too. Students have been seeing less of their friends and learning a lot more online. We all want to get back to normal as soon as we can but until then it looks like we will be spending more time holidaying at home and enjoying the Irish weather.

More people than ever have been flocking to the coast and our beautiful inland waters for local staycations. In the RNLI, our lifeboat crews have been busier too, launching to rescue more people in trouble on or near the water as more people visit the beach or enjoy water based activities.

The RNLI’s Water Safety Team wants to share how we can help everyone at your school keep themselves, their friends and their family safe at the water – from seas and streams to pools and ponds. We’ve made our safety information relevant for the different ages of your students and kept it informative and relevant to them. The water safety messages have been designed to be interactive and are easily shared with your students.

We know that a simple piece of advice can save a life and children are often the ones to remind the adults of what is right, having learned it at school.

Take a look at their materials to find out how we can help you by delivering essential life skills, in school and at home – and why they’re more important than ever.
Resources are free to use and have been developed to be adaptable to any location. You can access all resources via their website RNLI

World Book Day

This Thursday, 4th March, marks ‘World Book Day’ and as with tradition here at Piltown N.S., we will celebrate the occasion. The main aim of the day is to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading.
As part of our celebrations, children from all classes have the option of dressing up as their favourite book character on Friday, March 5th. Children who are still learning remotely can send in photos of their book character costume to their teacher via ClassDojo.
All classes have the option of getting involved!
We look forward to seeing a wonderful array of costumes.

Merry Christmas….everyone!

Our classes have all worked very hard this year to compensate for the fact that parents were unable to be present onsite for our class Christmas plays this year. Each class has put together ‘a little something special’ and the combination of all the classes great work is what we hope will be a special watch for you all. Enjoy every minute and very Happy Christmas & New Year to all our families and friends of Pitlown N.S.

Congratulations to Max Doyle

Congratulations to Max Doyle on his fabulous entry for the Lion’s Club ‘Peace on Earth’ competition this year. Due to Covid times, his award was presented by his teacher, Mr. Lonergan, instead of the usual presentations in the Nano Nagle Centre in Carrick-on-Suir.
